CHURCH HISTORY
St. Andrew’s Church has been present in Lincoln Park since 1917 when the original mission status was sought. At that time, land was purchased and a small sanctuary was built. In 1923, St. Andrew’s started to share a vicar with neighboring Towaco. In 1950, the Episcopal community in Lincoln Park called its own vicar to be housed within the town.
During the fifties the borough experienced dramatic growth and St. Andrew’s flourished, and in 1958 a new sanctuary was built on Main Street and the old structure was moved to its present location. Thorpe Hall, named for our first vicar, was renovated at that time to house all the activities of a thriving parish. Independent parish status was achieved in 1969 and the mortgage burned in 1983. Currently St. Andrew’s is a recognized, active parish within the community and the Episcopal Diocese of Newark.
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and Church of the Transfiguration
Seeking, Celebrating, Serving … Together
In 2009, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Lincoln Park, and Church of the Transfiguration in Montville/Towaco, became an innovative model for parish development and community outreach. Our Episcopal churches, about three miles apart, once served our respective local communities almost exclusively. But today we share what, in effect, is one larger community. So, rather than compete, or duplicate our efforts, we have joined together in a ‘shared ministry’ project endorsed by the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. Both parishes are maintaining their facilities, including their nursery schools, and are seeking ways to strengthen their current programs while exploring new ways to share their strengths and resources. Perhaps the most obvious expression of this sharing at the moment is our shared Priest, the Reverend Dr. David Cabush, and our Music Director, Fran Morton.
Except for special occasions, individual worship schedules are maintained at both parishes. But, if you are looking for us on some occasion and we don’t seem to be ‘at home,’ be sure that we are gathered at our partner church. We will do our best to keep the community informed, not only in regards to what we are doing but where we are doing it … because you are always welcome to join us, and our adventure together.
